„Paška sirana“ is starting a big project of growing olives and sheep on deserted Pag grasslands. On 160 ha, the intention is to plant 40.000 olive trees, and togehter with the olives, native sheep will be grown. That way the area completely covered with ( Juniperus sobina ), a plant cover which disables the growth garden-sage and other medicinal herbs would be destroyed and with that an undisturbed development of Pag vegetation would occure. Aftter getting an OK grom the city council, the making of the investment plan is underway and at the beginning of 2005 in the realization of the project. Devested grasslands that are completley covered in dense evergreen underbrush, will be brought to its normal condition. All of this is planned to be done in Grobine, situated 1,5 km from southeast from the town of Pag. Longterm wise, the value of the project je pricless because of the profit in sheep farming and olive farming. The program is pilot-project for all the islands which are covered in evergreen underbrush which is of no use. The realization of the project is planned for 10 years, and in that time, every year a new 16 ha of olives should be planted, The whole area will be fenced.

The techonolgy is following: it is needed to destroy all the dense evergreen underbrush. The field must then be furrowed and all the bigger rocks must be collected and disposed out of the place of the future olive farm. The rotating milling machine will destroy the rest of the rocks and at the end the places of planting will be pegged off and the rest of the area will the left to a spontanius natural renewal on the bases of the Pag vegetation. Four sorts of olives are planned to be planted: 60% of round log, 15& of Istrian whitting and 10% of the pendolino sort. There will be no ground processing, because the sheep will keep it clean if brushes while grazing.

The Adriatic Institut of culture and land improvement in Split, which is the author of the project, after 8 years is estimating a yearly production of a milliun and 77 thousand kgs of olives and 185.000 liters of olive oil, which would bring an income of over 1 million kunas. In five years of active production of olive oil the total income would be over 20 million kunas. With a yearly production of 36.000 liters of sheep milk and 3.600 kgs of lamb meat, after 5 years the income should be over 2,5 milliun kunas.

The imported milk if much cheaper than the one from the sub-contractors in Ravni kotari. Although it was considered not to buy off milk from Ravni kotari because of the high transport price and a low purchase of milk, the purchase from that part of the county was continued anyway.

During January „Paška sirana“ buys off about 600 liters of cow milk a day, and in February it starts with the purchase of goat milk. „ – Those are still low quantities for our need“, says Pernar. „That is why we will work on the growth of production in Ravni kotari. We will stimulate the producers in those parts to broaden their hurd because the conditions are there. Our intention is to help the producers of cow and goat milk in buying new head. In that we can help together with the community „Rašelja“ from Benkovci which is the bearer of such work in that area. The people in Ravni kotari which work with us gained a large amount of trust because we regularly pay for the purchased milk. Our goal is to get to the quantity of three to five thousand liters a day, because those are our profitable qunantities.“
